Getting Started with Roblox Studio

Your journey to becoming a top Roblox Developer starts here. Let's install Studio and configure it for professional development.

Installation

If you play Roblox, you likely already have Studio installed. On Windows, press the Windows Key and search for Roblox Studio. If you don't have it, log into the Roblox website, click the "Create" tab at the top, and click "Start Creating" to download the software.

Opening a Baseplate

When you open Studio, you are greeted with the Templates page. Do NOT select the pre-built games (like Obby or Racing). These contain outdated, messy code that will teach you bad habits.

Always select the Baseplate or Classic Baseplate template. A blank slate is the only way to ensure your game is optimized and built correctly from the ground up.

Camera Movement

Roblox Studio uses standard 3D software controls. To move your camera:

  • Hold Right-Click and drag your mouse to look around.
  • While holding Right-Click, use the W, A, S, D keys to fly your camera forward, left, backward, and right.
  • Use E to fly up, and Q to fly down.
  • Hold Shift while flying to move slower (great for precise details).

Essential Windows

To write strong code, you need the right tools visible. Go to the View tab at the very top of Studio, and ensure the following three buttons are highlighted (turned on):

  • Explorer: Shows every single item, script, and part in your game.
  • Properties: Shows the details (color, size, position) of whatever you currently have selected.
  • Output: The most important window for a scripter. This is where error messages and print() statements appear. If your code breaks, the Output tells you why.
